COEXISTENCE THROUGH ARCHITECTURE: A NEW TYPOLOGY for urban public space
Coexistence Through Architecture: A new typology for urban public space for the city of Hubli is my thesis work at architectural school. It is based on the theoretical premise that adequate and well-designed public spaces can help tackle inequality and segregation (and in its turn violence and crime) because they provide platforms for everyday social contact and encounters. A regularity of encounters between strangers is crucial to help people overcome their differences. The design for such a public space would try to achieve this through intentional opportunities for Triangulation and Fourth Places, principles of urban design that have been studied and determined to increase positive interaction. The proposed site for the project is a large urban void, the Bharat Mill site, recognisable for its iconic chimney stack - an important landmark integral to the heritage fabric of the city.
