London Design Biennale 2021: India Pavilion

The third edition of London Design Biennale took place between 1-27 June 2021 and was curated by Artistic Director Es Devlin. Taking over Somerset House, participants responded to the theme Resonance, which considers the ripple effect of ground-breaking design concepts on the way we live, and the choices we make.

India Pavilion: Small is Beautiful (curated by designer, architect Nisha Mathew Ghosh)

A mapping of ideas between ecology, sustainability and design. A view of India.

Small is Beautiful maps the many stories across the country that have sought to change the paradigm of the normative, and address head-on via inspir- ing solutions the armature of the natural ecological construct. Each story is a hero-story, a story of inventiveness, courage and community engagement. Each is fuelled by a passion for a better India, and we dare say a future eco-logically resilient India.

About the Illustrations

Each of the stories selected are those of small-scale innovations in design for sustainability from across the country. These stories include processes that are technical which are often difficult to comprehend. One way to communicate these processes in a manner that even a child would find easy to grasp could be through visual graphics and animation. One of the requirements was that the visuals had to be fairly diagrammatic (since they include processes with steps) but at the same time must go beyond the rigid manner of diagrams and have an element of playfulness to it.
